2021 Classes

Sailing Explorer

Beginning sailors, ages 5 (and completed kindergarten) to 9 years old. This class is designed to give your child a controlled introduction to the world of sailing with an instructor on board. Learning boat parts, basic knots, nautical terms and water safety will be the focus. This class will build confidence and security on the water.

Opti 1

Two kids per boat. Ages 7+. Learn boat parts, points of sail, wind direction, water safety, and how to rig a boat. Sail with a partner taking turns steering to build confidence. No instructor on board.

Opti 2

One child per boat. Ages 9+ and instructor approval following the successful completion of Opti 1. Build on Knowledge of boat parts, points of sail, wind direction, and water safety. Learn to rig and sail an Opti independently with confidence. Instructors continue to build on prior knowledge. No instructor on board, no partner.

Youth Learn to Race

An extension of Opti 1 and Opti 2 to build knowledge of boat parts, points of sail, wind direction, water safety how to rig a boat, and the skills and knowledge to race a sailboat. Sail with a partner or independently based on experience. Instructors build on knowledge with each session; No instructors on board.

Butterfly 1

Ages 9 thru teenager – minimum weight 70lbs. Students learn the basic theory and terminology of sailing and begin to build a foundation of skills. Learn to rig and sail a butterfly with a partner.

Butterfly 2

Builds on skills from Butterfly. Learn to sail alone in a butterfly, build knowledge of boat parts, points of sail, wind direction, water safety how to rig a boat, and the skills and knowledge to race a sailboat. No instructor on board.

Adult Learn to Sail

For adults 18 + in age. No experience necessary. Instruction begins on a Butterfly sailboat. Beginner sailors will learn rigging, basic boat handling, and points of sail. This course includes a US Sailing “Learn to Sail” textbook.

Adult Learn to Race

For adults 18 + in age. Builds on skills learned in the Adult Learn to Sail class. Sailors will build sailing confidence, and learn racing rules, starts and become familiar the different types of racecourses.

Partner Sail

Learn to sail with a partner. No experience necessary. You must register with a partner. Instruction will start on a club 420 sailboat. Beginner sailors will learn rigging, basic boat handling, and points of sail. More experienced sailors will build sailing confidence.

    My husband and I are interested to make the partner sail class.
    What us the procedure and how can we join the class?

    • Hi Simona,
      You can call the East Grand Rapids Park Department to register for classes. Unfortunately due to the current stay-at-home order, you are able to be placed on a waiting list but not register until the order is lifted.
